  Rabbi Balfour Brickner

Rabbi Balfour Brickner Executive Director, The Alfred and Gail Engelberg Foundation Senior Rabbi Emeritus, Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, New York, NY.

Rabbi Brickner began his career as the founding rabbi of Temple Sinai, Washington, D.C. where he remained from 1951 to 1961. During that time for seven years he also taught Biblical and post-Biblical Jewish history at American University.

In 1961 he joined the national staff of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations in New York City where he became the founding director of its National Commission on Social Action, appointments he held until 1980.

In 1980 he became Senior Rabbi of the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, a position he retained until retirement in 1992, at which time he assumed his present position as Executive Director of the Engelberg Foundation.

Rabbi Brickner has had a varied and unusual career. In the 1960's he was actively involved in the civil rights movement in the south, where on a number of occasions he enjoyed the hospitality of some of the area's finest Jails. Carrying journalist's credentials, he was one of the first American Jews to travel with Israeli troops into Egypt and on to Israel's Golan Heights during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. In 1970 he was in Vietnam as part of an inter-religious peace group. In 1984 he joined a similar group in Nicaragua supporting peace efforts for that country.

While at the UAHC he was involved domestically and internationally in efforts to promote deeper inter-religious relations between Christians and Jews. He has written filmstrips, study guides, monographs, articles, and books interpreting Judaism for the non-Jewish community. For eight years he helped create and hosted a national music and drama radio program "Adventures in Judaism," winner of a number of awards including four Ohio State Awards for outstanding religious programming. He has appeared on local and national radio and TV and his articles have appeared in national papers and journals.

His latest book is entitled "Finding God in the Garden: Backyard Reflections on Life, Love and Compost" published by Little, Brown and Company in 2002 and in paperback in 2003.

The Rabbi was born in Cleveland, Ohio, served in the United States Navy during World War II, and has two sons Barnett and Adam. His avocational interests include boating and gardening. . . . short bio
