Michael Gazzaniga is Distinguished Professor, Director of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, and Dean of the Faculty at Dartmouth College where he conducts research on how the brain enables the mind. Having earned his Ph.D. in psychobiology at the California Institute of Technology, Gazzaniga has made remarkable advances in our understanding of how the cerebral hemispheres communicate with one another, and has made information about brain function widely accessible to a general audience through his many books, including Mind Matters and Nature's Mind, as well as through the public television special "The Brain and the Mind." His forthcoming book, The Ethical Brain explores the impact of increased scientific understanding of the brain on moral and ethical behavior, including decision-making and personal responsibility, and how brain development defines human life.
Widely considered the father of cognitive neuroscience, Gazzaniga if founder of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society, has served on the President's Council on Bioethics since 2002, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Psychological Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science among others. With his long and distinguished teaching and mentoring career, Gazzaniga is a sought-after lecturer and advisor to various institutions involved in brain research.
