  Jane Elmes Crahall

Dr. Jane Elmes-Crahall, professor and chairwoman of the communication studies department and a noted expert in political rhetoric, will provide analysis of speeches given this week at the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

Her recent analysis of terms used to describe Senator John Kerry by the Republican party was featured in
USA Today on July 26th.

Dr. Elmes-Crahall joined the Wilkes faculty in 1985 and teaches rhetoric, interpersonal communication, public relations and organizational communication. She is the faculty director of Zebra Communications, a student-run PR agency at Wilkes. She has received five outstanding awards for teaching excellence at Wilkes and in 2001 was the National Speakers Association’s “Outstanding Teacher.”

A former forensics and debate coach, Jane’s expertise in political communication has been put to use in negotiating, producing and moderating dozens of judicial and legislative debates at the regional level. While serving as the Director of Citizen Education for the PA League of Women Voters she negotiated and helped produce the 1998 PA U.S. Senate debate and PA Gubernatorial debates in both 1998 and 2002.

In addition to being a scholar with over 40 publications and convention presentations to her credit, she is an active lecturer. On three occasions Dr. Elmes-Crahall was the featured lecturer at the Chautauqua Institution’s prestigious Amphitheatre, most recently in 2000. Jane is a member of Torch Club, AEJMC, ECA, IABC, and NCA.
